Forget throughput – latency is the new standard of internet quality. Whether it’s a glitchy video conference or a “laggy game,” it’s increasingly important to know how latency is impacting customers, and how it interacts with the network components we control. In this paper we will describe work done with Raspberry Pi-based test points that measure roundtrip time, jitter and packet loss, using realistic UDP streams. We will also share some of the early data we’ve collected and discuss what we’ve learned so far.
