5G Fronthaul Over DOCSIS: Transporting O-RAN’s Split 7-2x over DOCSIS (2021)

By Mark Grayson & John Chapman, Cisco Systems

The transition to open RAN (Radio Access Network) based on interoperable splits is gaining significant momentum across the mobile industry. Conventional composed base stations are being decomposed into separate radio units (RU), distributed units (DU) and centralized units (CU). However, where best to split the open RAN is a complex compromise between RU simplification, DU functionality, CU functionality, support of advanced coordinated multipoint RF capabilities, consequential limitations on transport delay budgets as well as interface bandwidth expansion.
