Cost And Performance Comparison Of Fiber Optic CATV Supertrunks Utilizing Fm And Digital Transmission Techniques (1989)

By John T. Griffin

This paper discusses practical implementation of cable TV supertrunks utilizing FM and digital transmission techniques carried on single mode fiber optic 1 inks. Architectures and 1 ink budgets are discussed, along with cost and performance comparisons. Noise and distortions inherent in FM and in digital techniques are analyzed. Those factors necessary for good FM performance over a fiber link are considered. In the digital domain, the performance factors of the digital converters are presented. The problems encountered in utilizing video distortion test equipment to evaluate digital systems are reviewed. Finally, some projections for future developments are described.
