In this paper, we describe for the first time unleashing the power of coherent optics in the OSP environment. When this capacity is combined with approaches like coherent muxponder (CMP) or Remote Switch on a Pole, the entire network can converge and carry 100Gbps to 10Gbps optical traffic down to individual nodes, businesses, and homes. We describe key technology innovations in bidirectional (BiDi) coherent optics, contrast dual-laser and sub-carrier approaches, point out operational challenges, and present architectures that help converge optical links from the core to the home.
