In this paper, we discussed the background, limitations and challenges of operating the PCMM at scale. We also discussed our proposed new solution at Comcast – the “vCMTS as a service” APIs which not only simplifies our end-to-end system, serves as a scalable, secure, extensible, and lightweight alternative to the PCMM, but also creates new growth opportunities for us to explore in dynamic QoS, service mobility, on-demand microtransaction use cases, and beyond. With the CAMARA project as the North star and our edge compute platform as the foundation, the "vCMTS as a service" solution is one of our incremental products for bridging our most advanced network technologies with our customers' needs.
