Standard Methods For Calculation Of Carrier To Noise Ratio In Modern CATV Equipment (1985)

By Lamar West, Scientific-Atlanta, Inc.

Carrier to noise ratio is a universally accepted figure of merit used to indicate performance of a cascade of CATV amplifiers. However, the calculation of system C/N has become somewhat confusing due to the lack of an industry wide method for specifying individual amplifier noise performance and calculating cascase noise performance.

This application note describes the individual amplifier parameters necessary for making cascade noise calculations. It also explains how those calculations should be made.
